The Utah basketball team will be without two players for Wednesday night’s Mountain West Conference opener against UNLV (9 p.m. MST).Freshman forward Kim Tillie broke his left ankle in practice Monday and will be out for the season, while freshman forward Daniel Deane will not play because of academic reasons.Coach Ray Giacoletti said he can’t go into details about Deane, but said, “He has an academic situation right now and we’re trying to get it resolved.” Giacoletti said he should know by the end of the week about Deane’s eligibility for the upcoming semester.Giacoletti did say he was surprised because Deane was an excellent student in high school at Judge Memorial. According to the Utah basketball media guide, Deane “graduated with honors with a 3.75 GPA.”Tillie’s injury happened when he came down on another player and rolled his ankle in Monday’s practice. It was confirmed Tuesday morning that it was broken. Both Tillie (6-foot-9) and Deane (6-8) play the big forward position.Giacoletti said he plans to start Johnnie Bryant, Curtis Eatmon and Stephen Weigh on the outside and Luke Nevill and Shaun Green inside against UNLV. He was considering starting freshman Luke Drca and having Weigh come off the bench. However, Drca injured his shoulder in practice Monday, although he should still play.
