Shatter I was breathalysed but hadnt done anything wrong

first_imgJUSTICE MINISTER Alan Shatter has sought to clarify the nature of an incident where he was breathalysed by Gardaí.Shatter says the incident – brought to light by Mattie McGrath in the Dáil this morning – actually happened “in 2009, or possibly late 2008″ at Pembroke Street in Dublin.McGrath raised the issue during this morning’s Leaders’ Questions, asking if either the Taoiseach or Tánaiste were aware of an incident where Shatter was stopped and breathalysed by Gardaí.The Tipperary South TD had claimed that the incident took place sometime between the 2011 general election, on February 25 of that year, and Shatter’s appointment as a minister on March 9.“No such event occurred at the time stated by the Deputy,” Shatter said in a statement this evening, saying he did recall a separate incident at a mandatory checkpoint.“There was a queue of motorists and when I was reached, like those before me, my Road Tax and Insurance discs were checked and I was asked to exhale into a breathalyser,” he said.“I did so, but failed to fully complete the task due to my being asthmatic. I explained this to the Garda.I also explained that I was on my way home from Dáil Éireann and that I had consumed no alcohol of any nature that day. The Garda consulted with another and I was waved on.There was no question of my having consumed any alcohol, nor of my having committed any offence under the Road Traffic Acts. The minister said he had not heard any further mention of the incident until it was mentioned in the Dáil today.Shatter also clarified the nature of an incident he had mentioned during Tuesday night’s discussion of his disclosure of the incident where Mick Wallace had been warned by Gardaí for using a mobile phone while driving. He said that incident was on Ormond Quay along Dublin’s north quays at 11:30am one morning “some years ago”.“A Garda on a motorbike stopped by my car and directed me to roll down my window and informed me I should not be in a bus lane,” he said.I explained that the signage detailed that all vehicles could travel in it between 10am and 12 noon.  No more was said and he moved on.Read: Greater protections for whistleblowers after penalty points furorelast_img read more

Le 7 février 2012 à 17:04 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Le 11 février 2012 à 11:25 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Businesses affected by Hazel Dell strip mall fire beginning to rebuild

first_imgColleen Conrad could only sit and wait as, in the distance, smoke billowed from her business. An employee had called her to say that the building had caught fire, but she was stuck at a stoplight down the street.“You know that light is like the longest light on the planet, right?” Conrad said.Conrad’s business, Dog Gone Clean pet grooming, was one of several damaged by a three-alarm fire on Jan. 19. Firefighters battled the blaze for 40 minutes. Three businesses sustained fire damage, but smoke that spread through the common attic at the Holly Park Shopping Center on Northeast Highway 99 has left surrounding tenants closed for the foreseeable future. The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office has been working with several insurance company investigators representing the building owners for several weeks to determine the cause of the fire. The likely cause has been narrowed to a light and fan combination located in the ceiling of the restroom in the Chic Boutique women’s consignment shop, County Fire Marshal Jon Dunaway wrote in an email. No matter the cause, the effect will be lasting on nearly a dozen businesses that called the strip mall home. Storefronts that didn’t have fire damage may reopen in the next six to eight months. The others will likely be closed for the next 1 1/2 years, according to multiple business owners.Dog Gone Clean was not damaged by the flames, so it is expected to reopen later this year, Conrad said. But for Conrad, who has owned the business for 13 years, the wait already has been expensive and exhausting.last_img read more

Amid business slowdown Singapore Airlines cuts 12 of pilot jobs

first_imgSingapore Airlines has cut roughly about 12 percent of its pilot workforce during the last five years owing to a business slowdown. The total number of pilots has come down to 2,056 in March this year from 2,331 pilots as of March 2011. While some of the pilots left voluntarily, some were asked to resign, the Straits Times reported. Even during the attrition process, Singapore Airlines or SIA had more pilots than what it required. One of the main reasons for the overflow of captains is that the first officers (co-pilots) were promoted as part of their promotion, a Singapore Airlines spokesperson was quoted as saying by the publication.Through various initiatives over the last few years, the Singapore-based carrier has been trying to reduce the number of pilots. For example, one of the measures it offers is voluntary no-pay leave to pilots and other voluntary movements such as pilots moving to Scoot or SIA Cargo. “I think it’s only fair to say that there has been some unhappiness, which has prompted some pilots who don’t see things getting better anytime soon to leave for other airlines and there is no shortage of airlines luring pilots, especially captains,” a pilot said.  Singapore Airlines laying off pilots has prompted carriers from other countries to hold recruitment drives in the island country. It comes with additional perks of higher salaries. For example, China’s Hainan Airlines held several recruitment drives in Singapore recently and was offering monthly salaries of about $25,000 (about Rs 16,95,000 per month).  “We are of course aware of recruitment by other airlines, which is not new. The number of pilots who have left to join other airlines is limited, and overall attrition rates for pilots remain very low,” the spokesperson confirmed. In October, SIA flew 1.6 million passengers. It also recorded passenger load factor of 77.4 percent during the same time, CAPA, South Asia’s leading Aviation Adviser, said in a report.last_img read more

Acitvision vs West and Zampella reaches settlement

first_imgFollowing two delays, the multi-billion dollar Call of Duty lawsuit between Activision Blizzard Inc. and Jason West and Vincent Zampella will no longer be going to trial. The two parties have instead agreed a settlement. According to Ben Fritz of the L.A. Times, “Jason West is in court and smiling.”This agreement ends two years of litigation after Activision shocked the gaming industry when it fired West and Zampella, the co-creators of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty franchise, in March 2010. After their departure 40 employees up and quit. West and Zampella filed a suit claiming wrongful termination, to which Activision counter-sued saying the two were disloyal and trying to relocate to rival Electronic Arts. Meanwhile, the group of 40 employees filed a separate suit declaring over $2 billion in damages for hundreds of millions of dollars Activision denied them in royalties and bonuses from the franchise’s success. The Call of Duty franchise, thus far, has garnered an estimated $7 billion in revenue. The settlement resolves all three of these disputes, but the terms remain private for the moment. All that is known is the three parties reached an agreement on Thursday, and will soon be dismissing all charges against one another.Activision has said that it doesn’t think the charges it is incurring as part of the settlement will impact its earnings for the quarter. Though, it’s fair to speculate that the settlement timing might be a little too convenient, considering Blizzard just released Diablo 3–a game that sold 3.5 million copies within 24 hours of its release. It could be seen as an easy way for the company to cover up any losses Activision is inevitably going to  incur now.Earlier, on May 15 Activision also settled its dispute with Electronic Arts over whether the company may have tried to recruit West and Zampella while they were still under contract. The company also paid out $42 million to the ex-Infinity Ward employees on the same day in back payments. This legal battle has been one that industry members and investors have kept close tabs on. The developers representing artist’s rights in the gaming industry and Activision Blizzard Inc. showing investors how it planned to assert itself and protect its investments in this battle. Now that all is settled, perhaps West and Zampella can go on to finally release their own AAA title at their appropriately named company, Respawn Entertainment.Read more at L.A. Prolonged sitting causes 4 per cent of deaths worldwide Study

first_imgNearly four per cent of all deaths  – approximately 433,000 per year –are due to the fact that people worldwide spend more than three hours a day just sitting down, a study has found.Various studies over the last decade have demonstrated how the excessive amount of time we spend sitting down may increase the risk of death, regardless of whether or not we exercise. The new study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, now estimates the proportion of deaths attributable to that ‘chair effect’ in the population of 54 countries, using data from 2002 to 2011. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf“It is important to minimise sedentary behaviour in order to prevent premature deaths around the world,” said lead author of the study Leandro Rezende from University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. He also highlighted that “cutting down on the amount of time we sit could increase life expectancy by 0.20 years in the countries analysed.” The results revealed that over 60 per cent of people worldwide spend more than three hours a day sitting down – the average in adults is 4.7 hours/day – and this is the culprit behind 3.8 per cent of deaths. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveAmong the territories studied, there were more deaths in the regions of the Western Pacific, followed by European countries, the Eastern Mediterranean, America and Southeast Asia. The highest rates were found in Lebanon (11.6 per cent), the Netherlands (7.6 per cent) and Denmark (6.9 per cent), while the lowest rates were in Mexico (0.6 per cent), Myanmar (1.3 per cent) and Bhutan (1.6 per cent). The authors calculated that reducing the amount of time we sit by about two hours would mean a 2.3 per cent decrease in mortality.  Even a more modest reduction in sitting time, by 10 per cent or half an hour per day, could have an immediate impact on all causes of mortality in the countries evaluated. In the words of the experts, measures aimed at addressing the determining factors behind this sedentary conduct would be necessary. “Some examples of this approach were recently highlighted by the World Health Organisation,” Rezende said.“A strategic health communication campaign was developed to promote physical activity among women in Tonga (Oceania), while a bicycle-sharing system was developed in Iran in addition to a sustainable transport system in Germany,” he noted.last_img read more
